What is Call-to-Action?

Call to action is either a word, phrase or sentence that will encourage the readers to have a specific response. It is also known as “CTA”, which in other words, call them to take action. With the right call to action, you can persuade those visitors who visit your website to do specific things such as buying a product, downloading, reading the rest of an article or sharing content on social media. The most common example is “Buy Now!”.

Why is it important?

It's easy to tell others what to do after viewing your ad or your content. However, making them feel motivated to move on is a real challenge. A perfectly creation of CTA is important because it can not only help you win customers, but can also help you to build loyal customers base.

Since you are reading this, for those that have not yet create a CTA on your website or those that want to have some tricks for making your CTA more attractive, please continue reading for more details.

Tricks for making a good CTA

  1. Short and simple

Mostly the call to action is in the form of a button or link. However, a short and simple word works the best as who likes to read a button with 10 words or above on it? For example, if you are selling products online, use words like “Buy” or “Order”. If you are promoting a newsletter or white paper, use words like “Download” or “Subscribe”. While you want to offer option for them to choose, remember not to offer them too much options as they will confuse on deciding which one to choose. “Call or Email Us” is the best example. It is important to let your readers know what exactly they need to do.

  1. Everything has a clarity CTA

Make sure every page of your website, every sales conversation, and every printed material such as direct mail or brochure contains clearly defined and easily recognizable calls to action. Don't assume that people will know what to do after they read your advertising or marketing materials. You will get better results by clarifying what potential customers need to do next. For example, if you are a blog author, add a CTA at the end of your blog post to read another related article.

  1. Encourage people to click on only one link

Many call to action phrases involve clicking on something. Try to avoid making multiple clicks to reach the stage of performing an action. For example, if you want people to read an article you tweeted, avoid sending that person to an intermediate page such as a Facebook page where you share the article summary. Instead, send the person directly to the article you want him or her to read. The more clicks a person has to make, the greater the chance that someone will lose before taking action.

  1. CTA not only can be found on one page

The more times the readers see the call to action, the more they can implement it. For example, if you want people to subscribe to your newsletter, have a subscription button or email form on every page of your website. If you want people to buy your product, always have a shop or add to cart button at every of the page to encourage them have a look at your product and purchase it.

  1. Use images or numbers if possible

People process images faster than word processing, therefore using high-quality images may be a good way to support a call to action. You can also include visual cues to point them to your offer. For example, insert an arrow pointing to your CTA also helps to attract them moving forward to click on it. Besides that, consumers will normally respond when they see numbers such as prices, discounts, promotions, incentives and more. It helps them to determine whether it's worth spending money on buying that product.
